From Novice to Expert Meteorite Hunters (with Ruben Garcia)

This video was so cool to do because I didn’t know what to expect when I first started editing it. My friends Paul Desilets and Mike Morgan had gone meteorite hunting (with a video camera in tow) and then sent me the raw footage. I knew that these two had become monster meteorite hunters over the last year but was still impressed with their hard work and tenacity.

One meteorite find in a few short hours on a dry lake bed and then many finds at gold basin was an impressive day’s work. I’m not sure if the “pros” could have done it any better! It’s amazing to think that both of these fine meteorite hunters found their first meteorite by sight alone only a few months ago.

I documented Mike’s first meteorite find by sight alone when I took him meteorite hunting last year. The full story of our adventure appears in the Aug. 2007 issue of Meteorite Magazine. Paul joined us a few months later and found four or five meteorites by sight alone his very first time out.

I wish I could take more credit for the expert meteorite hunters that Mike and Paul have become. However, the truth is that it has more do to with their persistence and sheer love of the hobby than my wonderful teaching skills.
