Meteorite Hunting on a Dry Lake Bed
One of the first things to learn as a meteorite hunter is where to look for meteorites. Optimal areas to look are places that are very old. Land that hasn’t changed for tens of thousands of years are prime locations.
Scientists believe that one meteorite falls per square mile every thousand years. Therefore, the older the land is the more likely that meteorites have landed there and still remain.
Its areas like these that are likely to hold meteorites for a very long time. Dry lake beds are just such areas. A dry lake bed may have remained pretty much undisturbed for thousands of years. Most dry lake beds happen to be surrounded by desert which makes it all the better as meteorites do not do well in wet climates.
Finding a meteorite is not an easy task, but ones odds increase drastically when hunting in areas such as these.
