The Tom Phillips Microscopic Meteorite Gallery of Images

Meteorite: Nakhla
Classification: Martian (nakhlite)
Process: Cross Polarized Light Rotational
This thin section is from a very special meteorite. Nakhla, the type sample for Nakhlites. About the coolest Martian meteorite there is. Samples, let alone thin sections of Nakhla are not easy to come by. This thin was a much appreciated loan from Jeff Hodges.

All these shots were taken in cross polarized light at 160X.

I have mentioned before that actually viewing on the microscope is like these micrographs to the tenth power. If you have knob in hand, the focus level can tell you much more than a single snap shot. This batch is one feature, not moved. The polarizer is rotated to give you a sense of how the colors change.
