The Tom Phillips Microscopic Meteorite Gallery of Images

Meteorite: NWA 482
Classification: Lunar (anorth)
Process: Cross polarized incident (reflected)light
NWA 482 Lunar    The description is in the 160X Xpol image group.  These images were taken of a thick slice.  Not a thin section.  I know, I was out in a 8 degree shop polishing it with alcohol on a diamond disk this morning.  The slice was supplied by Steve Arnold, many thanks!

I was geared up to set the world on fire with the Lunar reflected light micrographs I was going to take, but this NWA 482 Lunar is so translucent it's like trying to photograph ghosts though a plastic sandwich bag.  (I know I have never had any luck doing that!)  I had more luck focusing on the glass slide.

Ironically, it is the freshness of this material that gave me so much frustration.  I had to stay close to the edge next to the crust to find any staining I could focus on.

The first 5 shots are taken at 140X and, as you can see, 3 are of the crust.  The last 3 are taken at a magnification of 1600X with the aid of immersion oil.  All are in cross polarized incident
(reflected) light.
