This "ordinary" chondrite has some
very interesting characteristics. It has areas that are compressed and contain
black shock lines only a fraction of an inch away from areas with easily visible
chondrules. Some of the larger flakes of metal are two-tone in color and appear
to be both nickel iron and troilite. Some large chondrules 3/16th of an inch in
diameter have been found during cutting.
Some
of these as shown in the photos below are not really armored but are surrounded
by rings of scattered flakes of metal. There are also some inclusions that are quite strange in appearance. The mass retained
on about 85% of its surface a nice black fusion crust. However, some of the
crust on what was buried has exfoliated away. Some of this same buried portion
of crust has also changed color to a lighter dark gray. Not all slices or
fragments will show all these characteristics.
It has been recently classified as an L6-S2-W2 Fa25.6 +/-0.9, and has been submitted for inclusion in the Meteoritical Bulletin. We have prepared a number of fragments, and slices having one polished side and also some larger crusted end pieces with a polished face. An information card and a fact sheet with pictures is included with each specimen.
The major portion of this meteorite will remain in our private collections. But, we are offering a supply of this material at $1.50 per gram.
We also have thin sections of this meteorite for $50
each. It is a very colorful meteorite in crossed polarized light with many relic
chondrules clearly visible. Cracking can be seen in the crystal grains. Nearly
all slides have one edge that shows fusion crust.
This dark thin zone is
basically colorless in polarized light because of the melting. But, under
a microscope it is very interesting to view. The supply of thin sections is also
of course limited; so first come first served. Click up this photo to see the
coverage of the average slide. They will be sold largest slide coverage first.
The photographs below were shot from the slides and are representative of the
type structures seen in the slides.
